Your school could be missing out on $1.6M in funding

Last Updated: May 27, 2025

Learn everything you need to know about the NCCD, and how your school could be eligible for a share of the $11.2 billion in total funding allocated to students with disability adjustments across Australia.

Breaking Down the Numbers: NCCD Funding Opportunities

The Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD) is a government initiative that ensures schools across Australia receive appropriate funding to support students who require educational adjustments. In 2024, 25.7% of all enrolled students, that’s over 1,062,000 children, received some level of adjustment, whether cognitive, physical, sensory, or social-emotional. Of those, approximately 71% are eligible for funding under the Supplementary, Substantial, or Extensive levels of adjustment. With funding amounts ranging from $5,839 to $43,628 per student, the total national allocation exceeds $11.2 billion.

In a school with 600 students, roughly 150 students are likely to require some kind of educational adjustment under the NCCD. Of those, close to 110 students would meet the criteria for funded support at the Supplementary, Substantial, or Extensive levels.

With average funding sitting at around $14,800 per eligible student, that’s more than $1.6 million in potential support each year. Not hypothetical figures, real funding that could be used to ease the pressure on teachers, improve student outcomes, and strengthen inclusion across your school community.

This funding it’s about giving schools the capacity to take meaningful action. Whether that means bringing in additional learning support staff, giving your team access to targeted professional development, investing in the right technology, or tailoring the classroom to support individual needs, this support can be transformative.

Why Aren’t Australian Schools Claiming the NCCD Funding support?

Despite the significant funding available, many schools struggle to claim what they’re entitled to. The process, while designed to support students with disabilities, can be complex and demanding. To be eligible for NCCD funding, schools must provide evidence across four key areas: the student’s identified need, the adjustments made, consultation with parents or carers, and ongoing monitoring and review. This evidence often includes Individual Learning Plans, records of teacher assessments, and documentation of adjustments provided over a minimum of 10 weeks within the past 12 months.

The administrative burden of collecting and maintaining this documentation can be overwhelming, especially for schools with limited resources. Without a streamlined system in place, it’s easy for eligible students to go unrecorded, resulting in missed funding opportunities. In essence, it’s not a lack of need or effort that’s holding schools back, but the intricate and time-consuming nature of the NCCD process itself. Simplifying and streamlining this process is crucial to ensure that all schools can access the funding they need to support their students effectively.
